Leadership in Action: 6km a Day to Make a Difference
During the month of January, BDO NI Partner & Head of Tax, Lorraine Nelson, took on the awe-inspiring personal challenge of rowing 6km every single day to raise funds for the firm’s nominated charity of the year, Air Ambulance NI.
Over the last 31 days, Lorraine has rowed a staggering 186km—equivalent to rowing across the English Channel more than four times.
Driven by her passion for helping others and aligning with BDO NI’s commitment to supporting the local community in which they operate, Lorraine has already raised over £1,000 for the charity.
AANI provides the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) for all of NI. Serious or life-threatening situations can happen to anyone at any time and on average, every day, two individuals find themselves in need of AANI’s services.
Reflecting on an extraordinary month-long challenge, Lorraine admits, “I’ve said this more than once, but throughout the entire month, I kept thinking, ‘What have I signed myself up for?’—especially in January’s freezing temperatures.”

Despite the harsh conditions, the motivation of raising funds for a meaningful cause and the steady stream of donations kept her going.
“It was incredibly tough, but knowing I was doing it for a great cause pushed me through—even to the point of starting a 6K run at 9 PM, which I wouldn’t exactly recommend!
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported and donated, making the challenge not just possible, but impactful.”
Her determination is a testament to the power of pushing personal limits for a cause that matters deeply to the firm, and NI as a whole. Now, she’s inspiring others to get involved—whether by donating, challenging themselves, or simply spreading the word.
The team at BDO NI celebrate her dedication and hope to amplify her impact. You can donate and show your support for Lorraine and the charity, making every stroke count!
