HMRC clamps down on compliance checks of R&D claims
In view of the increased scrutiny into R&D claims, it is important that all companies making claims prepare the mandatory Additional Information Form (AIF) for submission with HMRC. HMRC have the power to treat any R&D claim as invalid, should a company fail to submit an AIF.
Prior to August 2023, additional information in support of an R&D claim was often provided through submission of a separate R&D report. Whilst submission of a separate R&D report is still possible, in some cases the submission of the mandatory AIF will entirely replace the preparation of a report.
The information provided to HMRC through the AIF submission should include various company details, details of the main R&D contact, as well as full details of all qualifying R&D costs incurred, alongside supporting project narratives.
The requirement for companies to file the AIF with HMRC is due to continue following the proposed merger of the current R&D schemes in April 2024.
BDO NI is happy to assist with the preparation and submission of the mandatory Additional Information Form. If you would like any advice on ensuring your company’s R&D claim meets the requirements set out by HMRC, please feel free to contact our team: Lorraine Nelson, Timothy Scott.
