The BDO Award in Memory of Micéal Murphy: Developing future leaders

Now in its 9th year, the time has come to announce the winners of the BDO Award in Memory of Micéal Murphy! Well nearly…

Before we do, we wanted to take the time to explain a little more about the award programme, led by BDO Partner, Laura Jackson in conjunction with Queen’s University Management School, it's importance and benefits to local students and the firm alike.

The Award was renamed the BDO Award in Memory of Micéal Murphy in 2016. Micéal was a former recipient of the award who sadly passed away in 2015. In dedicating the award to Miceal’s memory, BDO NI believes his enthusiasm will live through the current and future student award recipients.

Professor Ciaran Connolly, Queen’s University Management School said,

“Micéal's memory is an inspiration to staff and students alike and, through this award, he has had, and will continue to have, a positive impact on the future of many students.”

The award looks to recognise the top 3 Financial Accounting module students who score the highest in their assessments in their first year.

The work experience and summer placements awarded as part of the prize itself take place in the BDO Northern Ireland offices in Belfast every year and start with an Insight Day for the 3 winners. The 2022 winners will be availing of this insight day next week and we can’t wait to meet the newest members of our #BDOFamily in person as a result. Both the insights day and work experience/placement opportunities provided gives the students the chance to learn the basics of accountancy and develop professional skills whilst working with a range of successful Northern Irish businesses – all while they continue their studies.

The 2022 winners will be announced later this month.

We spoke to some previous winners about how they felt the award has contributed to their professional careers and personal development skills.
