What route did you take
to BDO?
I studied at Queens University Belfast, gaining a
2:1 in Business Studies and Economics. I subsequently
trained in KPMG, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant
in 1989 and in the same year moved to Ernst &
Young, London, joining their Corporate Finance team.
I returned to Belfast in 1992 to join BDO Stoy Hayward.
Why did you choose BDO Stoy
Hayward?
I had worked with many of BDO's founding staff during
my time at KPMG. By the time returned from London
BDO had established itself as the 'happening' firm
in Belfast and was really the only practice I would
have considered joining.
What is your role in BDO?
I was promoted from manger in 1992 to Partner in 1999.
I am responsible for Consultancy, both public and
private sector, and advise a number of ICT clients
with regards to finance raising. I am also Partner
in charge of People Solutions, providing HR Solutions
to clients.
Typical activities/projects
you are involved
in at BDO
Typical activities include appraisals, evaluations,
business plans and fund raising. Other internal functions
include the coordination of training for staff.
Best bits of working in
BDO/your department
My team never ceases to amaze me with their enthusiasm,
ability and the odd wise crack !
Your advice to those interested
in joining BDO
BDO is a great place to work. A great place to develop
your career and in the immortal words of the Times
BDO Stoy Hayward is 'pacey, energetic and fun'.
Interests outside BDO
My life at BDO is combined with looking after three
children. I have also been involved with the Ulster
Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants
in Ireland for the past five years and am currently
Vice Chair. I am also a Director of the Northern Ireland
Science Park.
