Business areas
Working in accountancy is not all about maths. We need people with different strengths and different backgrounds and education in order to be successful.
Learn more in this section of our website about what it’s like to work in the different areas of expertise at our firm.
Business Assurance
The Business Assurance group provides clients with a wide range of financial advice. Auditing forms the heart of Business Assurance.
Auditing involves obtaining an in-depth understanding of our clients’ operations, the industry in which they operate and the commercial and financial issues that they face. As a result we have the knowledge and experience to thoroughly check their financial accounts and records.
From the moment you arrive you’ll be a team member contributing to a variety of areas on the assignment including taking part in on-site audits, liaising with high level decision makers and understanding how we can advise clients on the future of their businesses. You will learn new skills with every assignment and have the continuous support and guidance of senior members of the team.
The next step is a comprehensive training programme – at external classes, in-house and on live projects, all leading to an ACA. Preparing for and passing exams is a priority, and we’ll do everything in our power to help you reach the required standard. After three years here, we’re confident you’ll be well grounded and well rounded, able to hold your own in any business arena.
Although much of our work is located at clients’ offices in the surrounding area, it could also take you around the world. Recent assignments have seen some of our team travel to far-flung places such as Czech Republic, Hungary and South Africa as well as places closer to home.
We’re looking for rigour, but also creativity – people who can come up with lateral ideas and unexpected suggestions.

Business Restructuring
Our Business Restructuring department specialises in turnaround, rescue and insolvency issues.
We aim to get businesses back on their feet as quickly as possible. This could mean providing advice on strategic options available to the company, its shareholders and its funders, or advising on operational plans needed to improve performance and put the business back on the road to recovery.
Where a business cannot be salvaged, we try to recover as much money as we can for banks, employees and other creditors. It’s not a job for the faint hearted. You’ll find yourself in highly pressured situations immediately, rolling your sleeves up and dealing with people from the shop floor to the boardroom.
Our Asset Investigation and Control (AIC) Group is considered a market leader in the area of asset forfeiture. This is a proven and growing deterrent in the fight against financial crime, whether in the context of civil or criminal proceedings. As a member of this team you could find yourself:
- conducting fraud investigations, often in insolvency related cases
- tracing, securing and managing assets
- investigating whether assets derive from the proceeds of crime.

Tax
Every day, in all areas of taxation, clients are having to deal with the mounting complexity of domestic and EU legislation… not to mention a much more aggressive stance from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and other global tax bodies.
This means that we need to help our clients understand the legislation and the impact on their business so they can plan their affairs to minimise their tax burden and ensure full compliance with tax regulations.
The service we offer includes company tax compliance, private client services, employment taxation, international tax advisory, private finance initiatives, expatriate tax services, VAT and transaction support.
As well as specialists who can deal with the most technically challenging sector specific issues, we also have people who can handle a wide variety of questions from large owner-managed businesses. Both these skill sets are highly valued and encouraged within the tax team.
We don’t separate compliance and advisory work. As such, during your training you will gain insight into all aspects of general corporate work.
At first, you’ll largely be dealing with compliance issues – providing figures for statutory accounts and preparing corporate tax returns. As you progress, you’ll be tackling more complex projects, advising senior staff at our clients on tax pitfalls and opportunities, dealing with the HMRC and getting to grips with complex tax advisory projects.
You will also have the opportunity to spend time within one of the specialist tax areas such as transfer pricing, VAT or private client or within one of our audit groups.
